Alyn Shipton is an award-winning author and broadcaster who presents jazz programs for BBC radio and was the jazz critic of the Times in London for over twenty years.

He was consultant editor of the New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, and his own monumental New History of Jazz has won awards on both sides of the Atlantic, including the Jazz Journalists' Association Book of the Year. He was on the editorial board for Jazz: The Smithsonian Anthology, the acclaimed 2010 revision of this classic work. He has written several biographies of musicians; his book on singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson won a 2014 ASCAP Virgil Thomson/Deems Taylor Award for excellence in pop music writing. 

In 2003, Alyn was honored with the Willis Conover/Marian McPartland Award for lifetime achievement in jazz broadcasting. In 2010, he was named Jazz Broadcaster of the Year in the UK Parliamentary Jazz Awards. He is currently a jazz research fellow at the Royal Academy of Music in London; when not lecturing or writing, he plays bass in several live jazz ensembles. Alyn lives in Oxford, UK.
