Jean L.S. Patrick was born in Carbondale, Illinois and raised in the suburbs of Chicago. Her family later moved to Lindsborg, Kansas where she attended high school. At the age of eighteen, Jean attended Luther College majoring in English while also studying history and elementary education. She later attended Kansas State University earning an M.A. in English. After becoming a bit tired of school her and her husband raised three children as well as many animals in South Dakota.

She is the author several books for children, including The Baseball Adventure of Jackie Mitchell, Girl Pitcher vs. Babe Ruth (Graphic Universe), and The Girl Who Struck Out Babe Ruth (Carolrhoda Books). Jean has also written a weekly children’s book column for the Daily Republic in Mitchell, South Dakota, since 1989. In her free time, she enjoys running, playing tennis, and watching baseball.
